January, 2011

Greetings to current and former Kettenburg PCC owners, and friends:

WHAT’S NEW:

Jean Alexander entered LARK in the Wooden Hull Yacht Club’s Raymond Wallace Iron Man Race, and is continuing to make up-grades to LARK.

Tom Pier entered ROBIN in the Jessica Cup, which is co-hosted by the Master Mariners Benevolent Association, and the St. Francis Yacht Club.

Archie Contreras has accepted a new job in Europe. Archie has hired Terry Tucker to complete the restoration on BALLERINA. The restoration is expected to be completed this year, and the boat will then be transported to Europe. The plan is for Archie to then move BELLE of the WEST from storage in Idaho to San Francisco, when Terry will begin finishing the restoration of BELLE. Terry is well known for his excellent work on wooden yachts, and I am sure he will meet Archie’s high standards.

You may know of my association with the Classic Yacht Foundation. One of their accomplishments in 2010 was to save three yachts from being cut up. Most notably is  SEA SMOKE, K-40, hull #3, which was originally owned by James Arness. There is currently a need to put TOMBOY IV, K-43, hull #1 in the hands of someone wanting to finish the restoration. TOMBOY IV was originally owned by Paul Kettenburg, and named after his son Tom. The boat is located in a boatyard in Oceanside, CA. Anyone you know that is interested should contact me for additional information.

Chris Museler (former owner of JANLEY) had an excellent six page article published in the October issue (American Special) of Classic Boat. Chris’ article is about Dennis Conner’s restoration of the 100 year old schooner FAME. Chris is a professional journalist, and both he and his wife Kara are excellent yacht racers. Chris and his family live in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Congratulations to Chris for another great article.

CURRENT EVENTS:

Jean Alexander, Los Angeles area Fleet Captain has graciously accepted the PCCYRA Board position of Secretary/Treasurer beginning this year. Jean replaces Archie Contreras, who moved to Europe.

There are currently no PCCs for sale.

The Kettenburg Regatta has been rescheduled for June 24, 25, and 26. This expanded 3 day event will be headquartered at the San Diego Yacht Club. Friday, June 24 will have Kettenburg yachts being Med moored in front of the club and at open docks with an evening party and BBQ. Saturday will have separate fleet racing (2 races) on the Coronado Roads and Sunday will have one long bay race with a festive trophy presentation at the SDYC. Each fleet will have separate starts managed by the SDYC Race Committee. The event will honor the Kettenburgs and the Yachts. This will be a very special event.

Note: This is a change in dates. It is also a change in co-hosts. The SDYC will co-host this event with the Ancient Mariners Sailing Society, rather than the Southwestern Yacht Club. It is also now a three day event vs. a two day event in the past. It also appears that the race course used in the past will also be changed. This is also an opportunity for the PCCYRA to hold the 2011 PCC National Championship in conjunction with the Kettenburg Regatta. More on that as additional information becomes available.

The Jessica Cup will be held in San Francisco on October 15th and 16th, which is co-hosted by the Master Mariners Benevolent Association, and the St. Francis Yacht Club.
